How it works: SMART Remote Management (SRM) is SMART's cloud tool for watching and controlling boards from a browser: find a board, view or control its screen, push apps, Wi-Fi and settings, send a message, lock, restart, wake or shut it down. The district owns the SRM account. To enroll a board, VSC (or district IT) types the district's Account name into the board. SMART also calls this the organization's domain name; it's the key that ties the board to the district's account.
| What's in the room | Software | Enroll |
|---|---|---|
| RX (RX275, RX286) | iQ 4 built in | The board itself, steps 4 to 6 |
| MX (V5) (MX275-V5, MX286-V5) | iQ 4 built in | The board itself, steps 4 to 6 |
| Older SMART Board with an AM60 | iQ 4 on the AM60 | The AM60, using the iQ 4 steps. The AM60 brings an older board up to the same software as RX and MX (V5); RX and MX (V5) don't need one. |
| Older board on iQ 3 (no AM60) | iQ 3 | The board, iQ 3 path in step 4. A compute card or Windows OPS PC in it enrolls as a separate device. |
1️⃣ District side: the account and its credits
The district's SRM administrator does this once, before VSC enrolls boards, sometimes working with SMART. The domain they create is what gets typed on every board. SMART's board screen calls it Account name ("the domain name you created for your organization"); GX boards label it Domain. It isn't always the district's name or organization name, so always get the exact domain from the district.
- In Chrome or Firefox, go to smart.glbth.com › Sign up. The Account Name may use only lowercase letters and numbers. This is the domain typed on every board. The organization name on the next page is only a description and is not typed on boards.
- Fill in Add more details (organization, contact, phone) › Create Account, then click the link in the activation email. No email? Check junk mail and make sure the mail server isn't blocking [email protected].
- A free 30-day trial starts when the account is created. To keep boards managed after that, the account must be activated by redeeming credits.
| Where the credits came from | What to do |
|---|---|
| Bought from a SMART reseller | An email arrives with a product key. Redeem it (below). |
| Included with a SMART product, no product key needed | Credits are issued automatically when the product is enrolled. Check the purchase confirmation email. |
| Included with a SMART product, product key needed | Claim it in the SMART Admin Portal with the claim code, then redeem it in SRM. |
| AM60 appliance | The AM60 box includes one SRM subscription for the warranty period. |
- Redeem a product key: sign in to SRM › User icon › Billing › type the key in Coupon number › Redeem. The credits show under Billing history.
- Included credits must be claimed within one year of purchase. After that, an activation error means the district must buy a standalone SRM license. Several boards on one purchase order share one product key.
- If the district set a Device pairing password (account settings › Device pairing tab), each board asks for it during enrollment. Get it from the district along with the Account name.
2️⃣ Open the network the board needs
SMART marks this "Important": allow these on the district's firewall and content filter before enrolling. The board (the SRM agent) needs:
| What it's for | Address | Port |
|---|---|---|
| SRM application server | https://*.glbth.com https://*.visomdm.com | 443 |
| SRM push service | *.glbth.com | 443 |
| Streaming (remote view and control) | https://*.glbth.com | 443 |
| Google push service (FCM) | Google's push servers (SMART lists no address) | 5228, 5229, 5230 |
| Storage (app and file packages) | https://mdm-packages.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com | HTTPS (port not listed) |
The admin's browser needs the same *.glbth.com, *.visomdm.com and storage addresses, plus:
| What it's for | Address | Port |
|---|---|---|
| Location by IP | https://pro.ip-api.com | HTTPS |
| Map tiles | https://*.tile.openstreetmap.org | HTTPS |
| Online chat | https://static-v.tawk.to | HTTPS |
| Remote control video (WebRTC) | 52.11.103.125 and 34.240.200.142 | 443, and UDP 30100 to 40000 |
- Remote control laggy or won't start? SMART also recommends allowing its WebRTC tunnel servers, a list of about 70 IP addresses that SMART updates. District IT should pull the current list from SMART's "Configuring the network" page for SRM when setting up the firewall.
- The board also needs SMART's general iQ addresses for updates and sign-in, including *.smarttech.com, *.smarttech-prod.com, ota.smarttech-prod.com, *.firebaseio.com (HTTPS and WSS), *.firebasedatabase.app and hellosmart.com.
3️⃣ Get the board ready
- Connect the board (or AM60) to the network by Ethernet or Wi-Fi and confirm it reaches the internet: open the browser and load a page.
- Install the latest iQ system software. SMART lists this as required before enrolling.
- Check the board's date, time and time zone are right. (General practice: a device with the wrong date can fail secure HTTPS connections.)
- Open Settings › Diagnostics and check SMART Cloud Status shows as operational. If it doesn't, fix the network before going further (see "Why enrollment fails").
4️⃣ Enroll the board (RX, MX (V5), AM60)
- Tap Settings on the iQ home screen.
- Go to SMART › Board control & diagnostics › Remote management (SMART's enrollment page shortens this to SMART › Remote Management) and turn on Remote Management enabled.
- Tap Launch Remote Management setting. On iQ 4.4 or earlier, open the apps menu and tap the SMART Remote Management app instead.
- If it asks for access to device data on first launch, allow it.
- Type the district's Account name in Account name. Check it letter by letter.
- Tap I accept the terms and conditions, read them, select the check box, and tap Enroll. Enter the Device pairing password if asked.
iQ 3 boards: Settings › Remote Management › Remote Management Enabled (on), then Remote Management › Launch Remote Management Settings. Then the same Account name, terms and Enroll. AM60: SMART doesn't publish AM60-only steps; the AM60 runs iQ 4, so use the iQ 4 steps above on the AM60's settings.
5️⃣ Optional: Advanced wizard (tags or agent password)
- Do step 4 up to the Account name screen, then tap Click here to enroll using the 'Advanced wizard'.
- Type the Account name. Leave MDM Server address at its default (https://smart.glbth.com/glbth/v1). Next.
- Add tags if the district uses them (for example, the building or room). Next.
- Optionally set an SRM agent password, which locks the board's SRM settings. Next. Use it only if the district asks, and leave the password with the district, not on the board.
- Next, select I agree, Next, Finish.
6️⃣ Confirm it shows up in SRM
- The next time the district admin signs in at smart.glbth.com, the board is in the Devices view, in the All and New Devices groups, tagged new.
- Before you leave the room, have the admin find it (or check with them by phone) and send a test message or start a remote view. Enrolled but not visible? See below.
7️⃣ Remove or re-enroll a board
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Board being replaced (including SMART RMA) or no longer managed | In SRM: Devices › click the board's row › Manage › Remove › Yes. |
| Remote wipe from SRM (iQ 4) | Devices › row › Lock › Factory Reset (older SMART docs call it Wipe) › Yes. The board re-enrolls by itself with the same tags and group. |
| Factory reset done on the board itself (iQ 4) | SMART says you must unenroll and re-enroll it. Same account, tags and group: in SRM, click the token reset warning icon next to the board. Different account, tags or group: remove it, then enroll again (step 4). |
| Reset the token by hand | Devices › row › Manage › Reset Auth Token › confirm Reset Auth Token. |
| Replacement board that was enrolled in another account | It may still carry the old account's token. Contact SMART support to reset it. |
SMART doesn't document what the board shows after Remove, or whether the board's credit returns to the account.
Why enrollment fails
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| SMART Cloud Status not operational, or Enroll spins and fails | Firewall or content filter blocking SRM | Allow every address and port in step 2, including 5228 to 5230. Test again from the board's browser. |
| Internet works on the board but SRM won't connect | Content filter doing SSL (HTTPS) inspection | SMART doesn't cover SSL inspection for SRM. Common practice: ask district IT to exempt *.glbth.com and *.visomdm.com from inspection. Or install the filter's certificate on the board: Settings › Security › More security settings › Encryption & credentials › Install a certificate (from a USB drive, not signed in; .cer, .crt or .pfx). |
| Wi-Fi asks for a sign-in page, or traffic goes through a proxy | Guest or captive-portal network, or proxy | Move the board to the network district IT set up for boards. A proxy is set under Settings › Network & internet › Internet › network › Edit › Advanced options › Proxy. |
| Account not found or rejected | Account name typed wrong | Retype it: lowercase letters and numbers only, no spaces. Confirm the exact name with the district admin. |
| Asks for a password you don't have | Device pairing password set on the account | Get it from the district's SRM admin. |
| Connection errors on an otherwise good network | Wrong date, time or time zone (general practice) | Set them correctly and try again. |
| Enroll option missing or fails on an old build | iQ not current | Update iQ, then enroll. |
| Won't re-enroll after a reset, or token reset fails | Older iQ 4 build | SMART fixed this in iQ 4.6.2. Update iQ, then enroll again. |
| Board can't be removed from SRM | Older iQ 4 build | SMART fixed this in iQ 4.7.2. Update iQ, then remove it. |
| Enrolled before the reset, now fails or shows a warning in SRM | Old token after a local factory reset, or a replacement from another account | Reset the token (step 7), or call SMART support. |
| Enrolled, then the district loses control after 30 days | Trial ended, credits never redeemed | District redeems credits (step 1). |
Field tips and tricks
- Check SMART Cloud Status first. It tells you in seconds whether this is a network problem or an account problem. Not operational: stop typing account names and work the network.
- Rule out every cause, not just the firewall. Work the table above top to bottom: network, SSL inspection, account name, pairing password, date and time, iQ version, old token, credits. Write down what you checked.
- One works, one doesn't? Compare them: same VLAN or SSID, same iQ version, same date and time. The difference is your cause.
- None in the building enroll? It's almost always the district network or the account, not the boards. Get district IT on the phone before touching every room.
- Test from the board's browser. If normal sites load but SRM won't connect, suspect the content filter or SSL inspection, not the cable.
- Plug in Ethernet to split the problem. Enrolls on wired but not Wi-Fi? It's the wireless network's filtering or captive portal.
- Typos are common. Account names are lowercase letters and numbers only. Autocorrect or caps on the on-screen keyboard will break it.
- Bring: the district's Account name and any pairing password (from the district, kept off paper), a USB drive with the latest iQ update if the board can't update online, a USB keyboard for typing, and a laptop to check SRM.
- Update iQ first, enroll second. An update and reboot mid-enrollment wastes a trip.
- Use tags at install. The Advanced wizard lets you tag the building and room so the district can find the board later.
- Factory reset? Plan to re-enroll. After any local factory reset (including a flash from SMART support's USB file), reset the token or remove and re-enroll it in SRM.
- Swapping a board? Remove the old one from SRM so it stops showing as offline. A replacement from SMART may need SMART to clear its old token.
- Don't use Android for Work enrollment. SMART says it isn't recommended for SMART Boards or appliances.
- Write in the ticket: room, model, iQ version, wired or Wi-Fi, SMART Cloud Status result, what you changed, and whether the board now shows in SRM. Never put the Account name or passwords in the ticket.
Still not working?
- Network checks out, account name is right, still fails? Restart the board and try the Advanced wizard with the default MDM Server address.
- Board was enrolled in another district or reseller account? Contact SMART support to reset its token.
- Activation or credit errors? The district's purchase may be past the one-year claim window. The district contacts its SMART reseller.
- SMART support: smarttech.com/contactsupport. Have the board's serial number ready.
