Fix No Picture on a SMART Board
Quick Reference QR-SM-006 · SMART · Rev 1.0 · Oct 2026
Black screen, "no signal", or the board shows its home screen but not the computer. Work from the quickest checks to the deeper ones, and rule out each cause before you move on: no-picture calls usually have more than one thing wrong.

How the picture gets there: the board shows whichever input is selected. A picture needs four things at once: the board awake, the right input selected, a good cable path (cable, wall plate, extender), and a computer that is awake and sending a signal the board can take. Check them in that order.
1️⃣ Read the power light
Look at the power light on the front of the board before you touch anything. It tells you where to start.
| Power light | What it means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Off | No power reaching the board | Check the cord at both ends and the power switch beside the power inlet on the back (ON is I). Test the outlet with another device. |
| Red or amber | Board is in Standby (asleep) | Press Power on the board or the remote. Still blank? Press Home, then restart (step 2). |
| Green or white | Board is on | The problem is the input, the cable path or the computer. Go to step 3. |
Waking from off takes much longer than waking from standby, and touch needs a few seconds after the board wakes. Give it time.
2️⃣ Restart or fully power-cycle the board
| To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Restart | Press and hold Power (on the board or the remote) for 10 seconds. |
| Power-cycle | Hold Power for 5 seconds until a slider appears, and slide it to the right. Set the switch beside the power inlet to OFF (O). Wait at least 30 seconds. Switch it to ON (I) and press Power. |
A board stuck asleep, or one that won't wake with the Power button, often comes back after a full power-cycle. Restart the computer too.
3️⃣ Pick the right input
- Press Home (below the screen or on the remote) and tap Inputs. If iQ is turned off, Home opens the input screen directly. You can also press Input on the remote, or the board's own Input button: on the MX (V5) it's on the front panel; on the RX it's on the small button panel on the side.
- Tap the input the computer is plugged into. A green dot on an input means it has a signal. No green dot on any input means the board isn't getting a signal at all: go to step 5.
- MX (V5) input thumbnails tell you more: gray = nothing connected, black = a device is connected but in standby (wake the computer), preview = an active device.
| Input | Where the cable plugs in |
|---|---|
| HDMI 1, 2, 4 | Side and bottom connector panel, HDMI 2.1 In |
| HDMI 3 | Front of the board: RX convenience panel "HDMI 2.0 in", MX front panel "HDMI In" |
| USB-C (1 and 2) | Front panel and side panel USB Type-C: one cable for picture, sound and touch |
| VGA | Side and bottom panel, VGA In (sound on the 3.5 mm In jack next to it) |
| OPS | A SMART OPS PC module in the accessory slot on the back |
4️⃣ Check the board's input settings
Open Settings › SMART › Input & hardware configuration › Input.
| Setting | What it does and what to check |
|---|---|
| Default input | The input the board goes to when it starts up or wakes from standby. Set it to the room computer's input if the teacher always uses one. |
| Switching behavior | Ask before switching inputs: a message bottom left asks to switch. Switch to the new input automatically: the board switches when a device connects. Switch to the new input manually: nothing happens when a laptop is plugged in until someone picks the input. If teachers say "I plug in and nothing happens", check this first. |
| Custom tiles | Renames inputs. A tile renamed "Laptop" on the wrong port sends people to the wrong input: check names match the real ports. |
5️⃣ Check the computer is awake and sending a picture
- Make sure the computer is on and not asleep or in an energy-saving mode. Wake it with the keyboard or mouse, and open the laptop lid.
- Windows: press Windows key + P and choose Duplicate. In Settings › System › Display, Duplicate shows one display labeled 1|2; only a 1 means Windows doesn't see the board. Under Multiple displays, click Detect.
- Mac: open System Settings › Displays, select the SMART Board, and set Use as to mirror the built-in display (or extended, if the teacher wants that).
- Extended desktop? The board may be showing an empty second desktop with no windows on it. Switch to Duplicate to check.
6️⃣ Check the cable and port for that input
Reseat the cable at both ends, then swap in a known-good cable. If only a connection message appears on the board, SMART's fix is to replace the video cable.
| Input | What the cable and computer need |
|---|---|
| HDMI | Longest SMART supports: 23 ft (7 m). For 4K, a certified Premium High Speed HDMI (18 Gbps) cable. Older or cheap cables often work at 1080p and fail at 4K. |
| USB-C | The laptop's USB-C port must output video (DisplayPort Alternate Mode; the board's USB-C inputs take DisplayPort 1.2). Not every laptop USB-C port does. Some USB-C cables only carry power: use a full-featured data cable (at least USB 3.2 Gen 1), ideally the 6 ft (1.8 m) cable that came with the board. Longest: 6 ft 7 in (2 m). |
| VGA | Longest: 23 ft (7 m), all pins wired, well shielded. Check for bent pins and tighten the thumbscrews. Set the computer to a VGA resolution (step 8). |
| OPS | No cable: the module must be fully seated and screwed in. Only reseat it with the board's back switch OFF and after waiting at least 30 seconds (let a hot module cool, up to 5 minutes). Only SMART-provided OPS modules are supported. |
7️⃣ Take wall plates, extenders and HDBaseT out of the path
- Plug a laptop with a short cable straight into the board's input. Picture there but not through the wall plate? The problem is the plate, the cable run, or the extender or HDBaseT receiver behind the board.
- SMART says to avoid connection extenders and signal converters where possible.
- On an HDBaseT room, check the green light on the wall plate and the lights on the receiver behind the board. Related: QR-GTS-001 Fix No Picture on an Interactive Flat Panel Fed by HDBaseT.
8️⃣ Fix resolution, refresh rate and HDMI version
A source the path can't carry gives no picture, flicker or drop-outs. Set the computer to one of these where it can:
| Input | Resolutions SMART recommends |
|---|---|
| HDMI, USB-C | 3840 × 2160 or 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz (also 50, 30, 25, 24 Hz); 1280 × 720; 1366 × 768 or 1360 × 768 at 60 Hz; 720 × 480 |
| VGA | 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz; 1600 × 1200; 1360 × 768; 1280 × 1024; 1024 × 768; 800 × 600; 640 × 480 |
- 4K needs HDMI 2.0 or better at 60 Hz. An HDMI 1.4 source, plate or extender only carries 4K at 30 Hz. Try 1080p, or change the refresh rate (60 to 30 Hz, or the reverse).
- HDMI 1 accepts up to 4K by default. On the board: Settings › Display › HDMI input › Video input maximum resolution, set the input to FHD (1920x1080p60), then Reboot now. Related: QR-SM-001 Lower a SMART Board's HDMI 1 Input to 1080p.
- HDMI version: the same HDMI input page lets you set the HDMI version for older devices. On HDBaseT and extender rooms, requiring 1.4 on the HDMI inputs and power-cycling the board often brings back a marginal link. EDID settings for HDMI and USB-C are on that page too.
- After changing the board's setting, reselect Duplicate or Extend on the computer to finish the change.
9️⃣ AM60-equipped boards
- Plug computers into the AM60 (its HDMI 2.1 IN or USB-C IN), not the board, when using the AM60's inputs.
- Select the appliance's input in the board's own input menu first. Then, on the AM60, open the toolbar, tap Input and pick HDMI 1 or USB-C IN. Disabled inputs don't appear in the list.
- The AM60's USB-C video needs a full-featured cable (SuperSpeed 5 Gbps) and a computer with DisplayPort Alternate Mode. That port doesn't charge the laptop.
- Many display settings aren't available while you're on the AM60 input. Press Home, select the display's input, and open its settings there.
- AM60 power button light off? The appliance isn't on or isn't seated. Reseat it only with the board's back switch OFF.
🔟 Board sleeps, wakes or goes blank on its own
- Wakes or turns on by itself: move bright lights, direct sun, air vents, infrared sources and reflective surfaces away from the sensors. On boards with an occupancy sensor, it can be turned off at Settings › Power › Energy Savings › Occupancy sensor. A device on RS-232 or an HDMI input can also turn the board on.
- Screen goes off during class: check Screen timeout in Display settings.
- Blank while a second screen is on HDMI Out: SMART lists unplugging the HDMI Out cables as a check. If that other display doesn't support HDCP, set the board's output to VGA (640 × 480) under Display › External displays.
Field tips and tricks
- Split the problem first. Board home screen shows? The board works: look at input, cable and computer. Nothing at all, even the home screen? Look at power, sleep and the board itself.
- Use a known-good laptop and cable. Carry a laptop you know outputs video on HDMI and USB-C, a short certified HDMI cable and a full-featured USB-C cable. Swap one thing at a time.
- Try a second input. Same laptop works on HDMI 2 but not HDMI 1? It's that port's cable, setting (4K default) or wall path, not the laptop.
- Read the green dot and thumbnails. No green dot: no signal is arriving, so look at the cable path and computer. Black MX thumbnail: the computer is asleep.
- "Works with my laptop, not theirs" points to the teacher's laptop: its dock, adapter, USB-C port (no video out), display mode or graphics driver. In Windows, Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B resets the graphics driver.
- Picture but a video app is black? That's usually copy protection (HDCP) failing through an older plate, extender or adapter. Test the laptop straight into the board.
- Flickers or drops out at 4K? Treat it as a path that can't carry 4K: 1080p on the laptop or the board's input first, then cable, then extender.
- Never trust "it's plugged in". Reseat every connector you can reach, including behind the board. Use a flashlight or phone camera to read labels and lights.
- Dark power light? That's a power problem, not a picture problem: check the back switch and cord first. After a power-cycle, wait out the full boot before you try again.
- Undo what you change. If a setting change didn't help (resolution, HDMI version, input behavior), put it back so you don't leave two problems behind.
- Whole building, every board? Think wall-plate or extender model, or the district's laptop image, not one bad board. Tell your PM.
- Use Remote Management. If the district has SMART Remote Management, it can wake, restart or check the board before anyone drives out.
- In the ticket, write: room, board model and serial, power light color, input used, laptop make, what you swapped, every setting you changed (before and after) and what fixed it.
Still not working?
- No picture on any input with known-good gear, straight in? Power-cycle once more, update the board's iQ software, then call VSC.
- Board home screen won't show at all with a green or white light: the board may need service or a recovery flash. Call VSC.
- Board won't power on with a good outlet and the switch on: call VSC.
- Under warranty? Many RX and MX (V5) boards carry a SMART Assure warranty.
