Written by: Brad Roy, VSC Director of Operations · Verified against: VSC field procedure for HDBaseT-connected interactive flat panels (VSC KB, 2025); SMART Board display settings · Applies to: Classrooms where the teacher computer connects at a wall plate (HDBaseT transmitter) and an HDBaseT receiver behind the panel feeds the IFP · Windows computers · SMART Boards for step 7

How it's connected: the computer plugs into an HDMI wall plate, which is the HDBaseT transmitter. The signal runs over network cable (CAT) in the wall to an HDBaseT receiver mounted behind the interactive flat panel (IFP), and the receiver plugs into the panel's HDMI input.

1️⃣ Make sure every connection is tight

Start with the obvious. Reseat the HDMI cable at the computer and at the wall plate, and the cables at the receiver behind the panel. A cable that looks plugged in can still be loose.

2️⃣ Check the light on the wall plate

There should be a green light on the HDBaseT input (wall) plate. No light means the plate isn't getting power or a link to the receiver: check the receiver next.

3️⃣ Check the lights on the receiver behind the panel

There should be a green and a red light on the HDBaseT receiver behind the IFP. They're harder to see: the LEDs are on the opposite side from the cable plugs, so you may need a flashlight or a phone camera to look behind the panel.

4️⃣ Set the computer to Duplicate

  1. On the computer, press the Windows key + P at the same time.
  2. Choose Duplicate.

5️⃣ Make sure the computer can see the panel

  1. Right-click the desktop › Display settings.
  2. When the displays are duplicated, you see one display labeled 1|2.
  3. If the displays are extended, you see two monitors, one labeled 1 and one labeled 2.
  4. Only one display labeled 1? The computer doesn't see the panel: go back to steps 1 to 3.

6️⃣ Change the refresh rate

  1. In Display settings, scroll down to Advanced display settings.
  2. Choose the SMART Board (the panel) in the drop-down menu.
  3. Look at the refresh rate. If it's 60 Hz, change it to 30 Hz, or the other way around.

7️⃣ On a SMART Board: require HDMI 1.4

  1. On the SMART Board, go to Settings › Display.
  2. Scroll down to HDMI Input › Require HDMI version.
  3. Choose 1.4 on HDMI 1 and HDMI 2.
  4. Power the panel off and back on to save the setting.
💡

Why it helps: a lower HDMI version and refresh rate asks less of the HDBaseT link, so a marginal cable run that drops the picture at full speed often works.

Field tips

  • Test past the wall: plug a laptop straight into the panel's HDMI input. Picture there but not through the wall plate? The problem is the plate, the cable run or the receiver.
  • Lights are your map: no light on the plate and none on the receiver points to power or the cable run; lights on both points to the computer or panel settings (steps 4 to 7).
  • Write down what fixed it in the ticket or field service worksheet, so the next visit starts there.
  • Still no picture after all seven steps? Call the PM before replacing the plate or receiver.
