A zone is a group of rooms or areas that a bell, page or notification can be sent to. Zones can hold as few or as many devices as needed, and a device can be in more than one zone. Every zone gets its own paging extension, so it can also be paged from a VoIP phone.

Example zone

What's in it

Entire School

All rooms and common areas, outside included

Inside

Every device inside the building (no outside speakers)

Classrooms

Classrooms only

Vocational

Art and shop classes

Fifth Grade Testing

Just the fifth-grade testing rooms

📝

Rooms first: A device must be placed in a room on the map before it can join a zone. Zones are built from rooms, not from individual devices.

1️⃣ Add a zone

  1. Log into EPIC as an Administrator. Go to Settings › Map Setup.
  2. Click Add Zone (right side, under the map). The zone panel opens on the right.
  3. Type the zone's name. EPIC fills in the next free Paging Ext. (5001, 5002 …). If the extension already exists, EPIC shows an error.
  4. Tick the rooms that belong in the zone, or click them on the map. Rooms in the zone turn blue so you can check them at a glance.
  5. Click Apply to save.

Map Setup › Add Zone on EPIC 3.2.5: the new zone in the list (1), Zone name (2), Paging Ext. (3), rooms ticked (4) and highlighted on the map (5), then Apply (6). Example only; nothing was applied.

⚠️

EPIC 3.2.5 creates the zone as soon as you click Add Zone. It shows up right away in the Zones list with a placeholder name (e.g. Zone 6) and the next paging extension. If you back out, open that zone and Delete it so no empty zones are left behind.

2️⃣ Edit a zone

  1. Go to Settings › Map Setup and expand Zones on the left.
  2. Click the zone to edit. Its panel opens on the right, with its rooms highlighted.
  3. Click rooms (on the map or in the list) to add or remove them.
  4. Click Apply.

Editing an existing zone: pick it in the list (1); tick other zones to nest them (2); change rooms (3); Apply (4). Delete (5) removes the zone.

💡

Nest zones instead of re-picking rooms. The Zones box in the panel lists the other zones. Tick one to put that whole zone inside this one, e.g. build Entire School from Inside + Outside.

📝

Copy: EPIC 3.x also has a Copy button in the zone panel, handy for making a similar zone. It isn't covered in AE's 2.5 manual, so check the result before you rely on it.

3️⃣ Delete a zone

Open the zone the same way and click Delete. Before you delete, check that no bells or events still point at it, and tell the office if anyone pages that zone's extension from a phone.

🛠️

VSC practice: Test after any zone change: send a short page to the zone from the EPIC home screen (Intercom/Paging › Select Zone(s)) and listen in a room that should, and one that shouldn't, hear it.
