🧰 Discover.jar (AE device discovery tool)
Finds and sets up AE devices off the network, including MS-700s and CZA-1300s. It's a Java program: the laptop needs Java. Get the current version from AE's downloads page or AE's direct download, or use VSC's copy here.
How VSC troubleshoots: a dead gym is never one big problem. It's a chain of small pieces, and only one of them is usually broken. Split the system into those pieces, test each one on its own, and don't move on until you've proven it good or bad. That keeps you from guessing, from swapping parts that were fine, and from chasing the first thing someone told you. Start at EPIC and work out toward the speakers.
| # | Piece | What "good" looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | EPIC | Device is green in Known Devices (not yellow or red), right type and firmware, volumes set, in the right zones |
| 2 | SIP | Device web page shows SIP Registration Status Registered, code 200 OK |
| 3 | Network and PoE | Link light on, 802.3af PoE port, Ready LED green |
| 4 | AC power | Power LED green (not red or blue) |
| 5 | Amplifier output | Audio heard on headphones in Line Out during a bell or page |
| 6 | Speaker line | Load at or above 19 Ω (VSC designs to about 21 Ω or more), no short, no open run |
| 7 | Talkback path | WPA Talkback Level up, WPA cable good; XD Receiver set up and queried |
| 8 | The unit itself | Reboot, then factory reset, then swap with a known-good CZA-1300 |
1️⃣ Check the CZA in EPIC
- Log into EPIC as an Administrator › Settings › Devices › Known Devices. Search for the CZA by name, MAC or IP.
- Check the status dot, and hover the mouse over it to see the reason:
Dot Meaning and where to go Green Online and connected. Keep going down this list. Yellow Online, but something isn't connected. The hover text says which: SIP not connected (go to step 2), TCP not connected (EPIC sees the device but its TCP connection is down: check the network path in step 4, then reboot in step 8), or Serial not connected (the RS-232 link to the XD Receiver; only shows when XD is enabled for SAFE alerts: go to step 7). Red Offline: EPIC can't reach it. Go to steps 3 and 4 first. - Check the device type is CZA-1300 and the firmware is current. CZAs pull firmware from EPIC daily and on boot.
- Click the blue pencil › Audio Settings: check Main Volume (VSC practice: 80% or less), Intercom and Paging Volume and Bells and Notifications Volume aren't at or near 0. A later Configure › Save and Push can overwrite per-device volumes, so a "fixed" volume that keeps coming back low usually means a push.
- Check the CZA is in the zones that are being paged and belled. A device left out of a zone gets nothing from that zone.
Known Devices: green = online, yellow = partly connected (hover for SIP, TCP or Serial), red = offline. The blue pencil opens the device; right-click the IP to open its web page.
AE training screen (EPIC 2.5 UI, lab IPs): a yellow dot on row 6 and two red dots. Hover the yellow dot to read why. AE: the most likely reason is the XD receiver not responding; SIP not connected is the other common one. Compare your device's dot with this.
2️⃣ Check SIP registration on the device
Intercom and paging ride on SIP. A device can be green in EPIC and still have no pages if SIP isn't registered.
- In Known Devices, open the pencil and copy the Device Password (never write it down or paste it into a ticket).
- Right-click the device's IP address › Open in new tab. A "not private" warning is expected (plain HTTP on the local network). Sign in as admin with the copied password.
- On Home › Application Status, look at the SIP box: SIP Registration Status should say Registered and SIP Registration Code 200 OK.
- Not registered? Check the SIP settings on the device, then push SIP settings again from the Configure tab in EPIC. Pushing from the Devices list does not send SIP settings. Recheck the status.
- Still not registered after a push? AE lists the causes as the SIP extension not registered to the EPIC PBX, or SIP / RTP ports blocked by a firewall or NAT. Ask district IT what changed on that network.
- Compare with a working device: open a working device's web page next to this one and compare subnet, gateway and DNS, and check the PBX / SIP server address is the EPIC server's address. Then push settings to the problem device only, from the Configure tab.
- Did the page or call reach it? In EPIC: Settings › System Settings › SIP › Asterisk Logs. A page lists every extension it called and whether each answered; a room call goes to ring group 6000. This device's extension missing or not answered = the SIP side. Answered but the room heard nothing = the audio side (speakers, wiring, volumes).
CZA-1300 web page, Home › Application Status (VSC demo system; the MS-700's page looks the same). Compare the SIP box: SIP Registration Status Registered and SIP Registration Code 200 OK = good. Current Status Idle is normal with no call; the Help panel at right lists every status (Calling, Ringing, Connected). Inputs and Outputs shows the GPIO inputs: press the wall plate call button and watch Input 1. MAC address blanked.
Compare: an older AE device page (MS-500, AE training). Left: failed to register, Time till next Registration in red (AE: wrong SIP server, extension or password). Right: registered with the EPIC server, the same field in green. SIP PBX should be the EPIC server's address.
3️⃣ Read the front panel LEDs
Front panel: Power, Status (Ready, Activity) and GPIO 1 to 4.
| LED | What you see | What it tells you, and where to go next |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Green | AC and PoE both present. Power is good. |
| Red | PoE only. No AC: cord unplugged, outlet dead or the rear Power Switch off (step 4). | |
| Blue | AC only. No PoE: check the network cable and switch port (step 3 below). | |
| Yellow | Standby. EPIC can put the amp in standby when idle and wakes it before network audio (standby is off by default). | |
| Off | No power at all. | |
| Ready | Red, then green | Red while booting and getting an IP. Stuck on red: it isn't getting an address or a network (check the port, VLAN and DHCP with district IT). |
| Activity | Red | An event is active on the device. |
| GPIO 1 to 4 | Yellow / Blue / White | Yellow = input closed, blue = output closed, white = both. A clue when testing the wall plate buttons (step 7, photo there). |
Compare: CZA-1300 front panel during a call (AE training). Ready green, Activity red. Waiting for activity = Ready green, Activity off.
4️⃣ Prove the network and power
- Network: only the PoE Ethernet jack goes to a switch. Check its link light and that the switch port is 802.3af PoE and enabled. Prove it: move the patch cable to a known-good PoE port, or plug in a short known-good patch cable. If the CZA comes online, the problem was the port or cable.
- DHCP: the CZA needs an address inside the EPIC VLAN's range. An address from another range (DHCP scope wrong, or the port on the wrong VLAN) means EPIC never sees it.
- VLAN: a "known-good" port only counts if it's on the correct VLAN for EPIC devices. Moving the CZA to a working port on the wrong VLAN looks exactly like a dead amp. Get the EPIC VLAN from district IT. You can confirm the VLAN a port is on with Wireshark, but you need to know the VLAN tag number to look for: see QR-GTS-003 Find a Device's Switch Port and VLAN with Wireshark.
- Prove the VLAN with a working room's port: at the switch, swap this device's patch cable with one from a room that's online. This device comes online and the other room drops = that switch port is on the wrong VLAN: give it to the network admin. This device stays offline and the other room is fine = the VLAN is OK; look at the IP, gateway, DNS and PBX settings next.
- IP conflict? Unplug the device, then ping or browse to its IP. Anything still answers = another device has that address.
- TCP not connected but SIP is fine? Network gear is passing SIP but blocking EPIC's TCP control traffic: give the port list (step 2) to the network admin.
- AC: both feeds are required: PoE runs the electronics, AC runs the speaker amplifier. Check the cord, the outlet (or UPS), the rear Power Switch, the AC Voltage Select (100 to 120 V in the US) and the fuse in the AC Power In inlet.
- Offline in EPIC with good LEDs? AE's causes are the IP being unreachable from the EPIC server, the device powered down, or a wrong IP. Check the IP in EPIC matches the device.
- Check its network settings from your phone: AE's 2024 CZA-1300 guide sets the amp up with AE's Device Configuration app (iOS and Android) over Bluetooth, through the BLE dongle in its USB port. Open the app, pick the CZA from Nearby Devices (strongest signal if several show) and check the Network screen: EPIC IP / URL, DHCP or static, IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS. A wrong EPIC address or a duplicate or wrong static IP keeps it offline. The app works the same way on the CZA as on VSC's other AE devices. Not listed in the app? Once a device joins EPIC its Bluetooth is usually turned off: in EPIC, open the CZA with the pencil and, under Control Interfaces, set BLE Interface Enabled to On, then Save (switch the page to Advanced if you don't see it). AE's 2025 guide drops this section, so if the app won't connect, use VSC's TL-SG1005P PoE+ bench switch and AE's Discover.jar tool off the network (step 8).
EPIC device settings, Control Interfaces (VSC demo system). BLE Interface Enabled = On lets the Device Configuration app see the device over Bluetooth. Off = the app won't list it. The same section shows the TCP Control Port (12302) and Serial GW TCP Port (12303) that EPIC uses to reach the device.
CZA-1300 rear panel. Check here in step 4: PoE Ethernet (the only jack that goes to a switch), AC Voltage Select, Power Switch and AC Power In (fuse in the inlet). Reboot is the pinhole beside WPA-70x (step 8); Line Out is for the headphone test (step 5).
5️⃣ Split the audio path at the amplifier
This one test tells you which half of the system to work on.
- Plug wired headphones into the CZA's Line Out (3.5 mm).
- Ring a bell or send a page to the space from EPIC.
- Hear it? The CZA and everything upstream (EPIC, network, SIP) are working. The problem is the speakers or speaker wiring: go to step 6.
- Don't hear it? The problem is the CZA or upstream. Recheck steps 1 to 4, then go to step 8.
The Line Out Level knob sets the headphone level; turn it up before calling it silent. Reverse test: plug a phone into the CZA's Line In (3.5 mm) and play music. Heard in the space = the amp and speakers are good, so the problem is the network or EPIC side.
6️⃣ Prove the speaker line
- Turn the CZA off before touching Speaker Out.
- Uninstall the speaker wiring from the Speaker Out binding posts and meter the line with an impedance meter (Gold Line ZM1P: 70 V, 1K, WATTS; setup in QR-AE-040). Not a multimeter: it reads transformer DC resistance, so a good line can look like a short. AE's minimum load is 19 Ω; VSC designs to 240 W of taps, about 21 Ω or more. Far below that, or near 0 Ω, means a short or too many taps. Infinite means an open (broken or unlanded) run.
- More than one home run? Land and test one run at a time. The run that drops the reading or kills the audio is the bad one. Then walk that run: open speakers, crushed cable, a cut during construction, a bad tap setting.
- Check the math: add up every speaker tap and compare it with your meter reading (70 V load in ohms is about 5,000 ÷ watts). AE's training says the two should agree within about 10%. On the CZA's 300 W channel: 240 W of taps or less is good, 240 to 258 W is questionable, over 260 W must be fixed before you connect it. The CZA-1300 can't be bridged to drive more speakers. (VSC has gone to 90%, 270 W of taps, in the past in extreme cases when necessary. It carries risk: 270 W is past AE's 260 W line and meters about 18.5 Ω, under the 19 Ω minimum. Don't design to it.)
- Reroute to another amplifier: with the wiring uninstalled, land the speaker line on another working amp. Speakers play there = the line is good and the CZA is the problem. Still dead = the fault is in the field wiring or speakers.
- Test with known-good parts: just like swapping patch cables on the network side, put known-good pieces in one at a time: a known-good 70 V speaker straight on the CZA's binding posts with a short lead (audio = the amp is good), a known-good speaker in place of a suspect one, or a known-good temporary run in place of a suspect run.
AE training: test the finished run for at least 19 Ω before connecting it to 70V Speaker Out; 240 W (80% headroom) is the design limit; the CZA-1300 does not bridge; PoE+ (network board) and AC (300 W amplifier) power the two halves separately, and both must be on.
AE's impedance calculator (Level 1 training): 300 W of taps on a 300 W channel at 70 V with a 19.0 Ω reading = about 258 W, in the questionable band, and 16% away from the tap total (outside ±10%). Run your own numbers the same way. Full walkthrough: QR-AE-040.
7️⃣ No intercom or no talkback from the space
| Talkback source | Check |
|---|---|
| WPA wall plate (call button, mic) | In EPIC, open the CZA with the pencil › Audio Settings and check WPA Talkback Level isn't turned all the way down. Check the WPA cable and termination (T568B: pin 3 Call, pin 4 +24 V, pin 5 GND, pins 1 and 2 Mic). Have someone press the call button while you watch the GPIO LEDs: the panel labels the WPA Call input GPI 1, and AE says a GPIO LED lights yellow when its input closes. AE doesn't document this exact test, so treat no light as a clue, not proof. |
| XD Receiver (wireless mics, SAFE) | In EPIC, open the CZA with the pencil: Capabilities = XD Enabled and the right XD Receiver ID, then Query All XD on Known Devices. Check the CAT6 from the XD port to the receiver and the separate 3-wire RS-232 run: receiver TxD to pin 3 RX, RxD to pin 2 TX, GND to pin 1. TX and RX must be crossed. |
EPIC, CZA-1300 pencil › Audio Settings (VSC demo system). Compare: WPA Talkback Level (here 0 db, slider near the top), Intercom and Paging Volume (87%), Main Volume and Ambient Mic Volume. A WPA Talkback Level slid all the way left means no talkback from the wall plate. Beep on Call Answer and Echo Cancellation Mode sit just above under Intercom and Paging.
Compare: GPIO LEDs lit (AE training). GPIO 2 blue = output (relay) closed, GPIO 3 yellow = input (contact) closed, GPIO 4 white = both. All off = everything open. Watch these while someone presses the wall plate call button. The legend is printed on the panel at the right.
AE training: the CZA-1300 rear and the wall plates that use its WPA-70x port: the call / emergency wall plate (Call button, mic, Emergency button; rear has the RJ45 and a 5xx/7xx dip switch) and the ITC. An MS-500/600 wall plate needs AE cable AC-2179. Compare the plate on the wall with these.
AE training: CZA-1300 jack pinouts. WPA (purple): pins 1 and 2 Mic, pin 3 I/O In #1 (Call), pin 4 +24 V, pin 5 GND, pin 6 I/O In #2 (Emergency only). XD Port (black) carries XD audio and +24 V; RS-232: pin 1 Ground, pin 2 TX, pin 3 RX. Compare with the cable you terminated.
AE training screen (EPIC 2.5 UI, shown on an MS-700; the CZA's pencil has the same fields): Capabilities = XD Enabled, an XD Receiver ID filled in, and Check Receiver ID to test it. Device password blanked.
8️⃣ Reboot, reset, then swap
Do these in order and only after steps 1 to 7. All use the Reboot button on the rear panel.
| Step | How | Before and after |
|---|---|---|
| Reboot | Hold 5 seconds. | Watch Ready go red, then green. Recheck EPIC (green) and SIP (Registered). |
| Factory reset | Hold until the Activity LED flashes green (about 10 seconds), then release. | Before: write down the CZA's settings from EPIC (name, IP, zones, volumes, capabilities, XD Receiver ID). After: it comes back under Unknown Devices in EPIC, but only if the network is right: DHCP on and giving it an address inside the EPIC VLAN's range. (If the VLAN is 10.10.10.1 to 254 and DHCP hands out 10.30.15.85, it won't show up.) Not showing? Set its network with the Device Configuration app on your phone, or connect it to VSC's TL-SG1005P PoE+ bench switch with a laptop, off the network, and find and set it with AE's Discover.jar tool (a Java program; the laptop needs Java) (full steps: QR-AE-041 Find and Re-address an AE Device with Discover.jar). VSC has used it to find MS-700s and CZA-1300s. Get it from AE's downloads page, audioenhancement.com/downloads, or AE's direct link s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/aemarketing/discovery.zip; a copy is also attached to this guide in the VSC KB. Once it's in EPIC, add it, push its settings and push SIP from the Configure tab, then retest bells, a page and intercom. |
| Rescue mode | Hold until Activity turns red (about 15 seconds), then release. Or unplug PoE, hold Reboot and plug PoE back in. | For a unit that won't boot normally. Note that you used it and tell AE Support. |
| Swap | Put a known-good CZA-1300 in its place on the same cables. | Works on the same wiring = the original unit is faulty: start a warranty repair (RMA). Same fault = it's not the amp; go back to steps 4 to 7. |
AE training screen (EPIC 2.5 UI, lab IPs): after a factory reset the device shows under Unknown Devices by MAC, type, IP and firmware. Match the MAC on the unit's label, then click the green + to add it.
Field tips and tricks
- One change at a time. Change one thing, test, write down the result. Two changes at once and you won't know which one fixed it.
- Bells work but pages don't? Think SIP and the Intercom and Paging volume, not the speakers.
- Pages work but bells don't? Check Bells and Notifications Volume and the bell schedule's zones.
- Bring: wired headphones (3.5 mm), an impedance meter, a known-good 70 V speaker with leads, known-good patch cables, a PoE tester, and if you have one, a known-good CZA-1300.
- Gym or cafeteria too quiet, not dead? Check Line In / Line Out Level knobs, the speaker taps and Main Volume before blaming the amp.
- Photos: take one of the front LEDs and the rear wiring before you touch anything, and again when you leave.
- Write results down as you go on the Field Service worksheet, not from memory afterward. It's what we send AE Support so they start where we stopped, not from step 1.
Still not working?
- Fault follows the CZA to known-good wiring, or a known-good CZA fixes it: the unit is faulty. Start a warranty repair (RMA) with AE and send what you found at each step.
- Fault stays with the wiring on a known-good amp: it's the field wiring or speakers. Repair the run.
- Calling AE Support (800.932.3578, [email protected], Mon to Fri 5 AM to 6 PM MST)? Have the serial, MAC, IP, firmware, LED states, SIP status and code, the headphone result and the impedance reading ready, plus photos.
